How to Protect Your Capital – TradingView Guide

Protecting your capital is one of the most essential skills a trader can develop. No matter how strong your strategy is, if you don’t know how to manage risk, you can quickly turn a winning trade into a losing one. In this guide, we’ll walk through a simple but powerful way to secure your profits using TradingView.

In a recent video, I demonstrated how to use TradingView paper trading to place stop-market orders and manage trade entries. Now, I want to follow up with a key strategy: making a trade risk-free once it gains momentum.

Why You Should Make a Trade Risk-Free

At the moment, this trade is up $175–$200 in profit and is approaching a potential support level—the New York opening range. If the price reverses from here, I don’t want to give back my profits. By adjusting my stop-loss, I can ensure that even if the trade turns against me, I won’t take a loss.

How to Adjust Your Stop-Loss to Remove Risk

Making a trade risk-free is a simple process:

  1. Identify your entry point – Once the trade has moved in your favor, look at the price action and key levels.
  2. Click and drag your stop-loss – Move it a few ticks below your entry to ensure you break even if the trade reverses.
  3. Confirm the modification – When prompted, approve the order adjustment.
  4. Lock in profits if needed – If the trade continues moving in your favor, consider trailing your stop to secure gains as it progresses.

Now, even if the price moves against you, you lose nothing—your trade is completely risk-free.

Next Steps: Managing a Profitable Trade

Once your trade is risk-free, you have options:

  • Trailing Stop Strategy – You can manually adjust your stop after each candle close, locking in more profit as the trade moves in your favor.
  • Extending Profit Targets – If momentum is strong, you can drag your take profit level lower to give the trade more room to run.

Final Thoughts

Trading isn’t just about finding good entries—it’s about managing trades effectively. Making a trade risk-free is a fundamental skill that protects your capital and allows you to trade with confidence.
